Bad anime... often talked about, sometimes ignored, yet rarely forgotten. This list was a tough one to make, but I think I came up with a solid list of awful. The problem was when I find a bad anime, call me crazy, I stop watching it. I've seen every episode of three of my choices, but the last two choices... I just couldn't force myself to keep watching them. Now, there were a few self-imposed rules I set for myself when making this worst anime list. First, I only looked back to series' (at least 10 episodes) made after the year 2000. Anime before that are judged by a different standard, or should be, so I left them off the list. Had to have a cut off point somewhere, so that's mine. Second, I tried to pick a variety of genres. It wouldn't be as fun to make a list of five similar anime I dislike because I dislike their genre. Lastly, I know I'll change my mind given time. I haven't seen everything, not by a long shot, so the chances of my finding an older anime worse than those mentioned is possible. I may even add a widget with my current best and worst anime compared to the general public...hm, not a bad idea...I'll have to add that to the "to do list". Anyways, now that the explanation is out of the way, let's begin with #5.
Worst Anime #5
Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
This show was a fairly popular Shonen at the time of its release (2005-2007) and still has a decent following today, so it may be a surprise for the list. The manga is still ongoing by the well known artists of Clamp and the animation was done by Bee Train, which split off from Production I.G. The director, Kōichi Mashimo, is best known for his work on ".hack//Sign"
This show is about Syaoran, pronounced Shh-ow-ron, who travels to different parallel worlds in search for feathers. Each feather represents a lost memory from princess Sakura, his love interest, which were scattered at the beginning of the show. Sounds fine right?
Well, if those names sound familiar to you, there is a good reason for that. They both appeared in Cardcaptor Sakura, another clamp offering, with the same names and similar appearances. They get around this by saying all universes are connected, but it just comes off as an excuse to throw all their various characters into the same setting, which they do...shamelessly. It doesn't help that the series is probably 75% filler, and I'm being generous, and don't even get me started on the minute long pauses where they just show a couple characters looking at each other. Every episode has it, and it is ridiculous every time. It's like someone just hit the pause button. The characters are mildly interesting, and I've always liked the Clamp art style, but the overall story... is for lack of a better word, boring. There are some plot twists, but by the time I got through the boring and random story lines of 50+ episodes, I didn't even care. The one thing this Anime has going for it is the music. Yuki Kajura did a great job on the music, as she does with everything she works on honestly, and it is the shows only high point.
Worst Anime #4
Hagure yuusha no estetica aka Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero
The manga is still ongoing. It was made by Arms Corporation, created by people from Studio Pierrot, and directed by Rion Kujô.
The show is about people who are mysteriously and without warning shifted to a fantasy world named Alayzard. Normally, the show would take place in that fantasy world full of swords, magic, and whatnot. No, this is about what happens after they get back to reality, still possessing whatever magic and/or skills learned in Alayzard. The main character Akatsuki Ousawa has just arrived back in reality after beating the Demon Lord. The Demon Lord requested he take care of his daughter as he laid dying, so he brought her with him to his reality. They then proceed to go to school for people who returned from Alayzard, because that's just what you'd expect in an Anime.
Now, where to begin. The show is a harem with mild to extreme ecchi tendencies. That means I am already predisposed to not like it. Doesn't mean I dislike the entire genre, I thought Rosario+Vampire was alright for example, but the ones I like are far and few between. If I had to describe the main character, a Rogue does kind of fit. If that rogue was overpowered and sexually harassed every girl around him. Not uncommon for him to strip clothes or to take undergarments just because he can. It comes off as incredibly creepy, especially since it seems malicious. He likes causing trouble and that, plus the connections between worlds, is what the show mostly deals with. The character personalities aren't unique in the least, and the story is just there to get you to his next "prank". The premise was decent, it reminded me a bit of Maoyu from my first review, but it didn't do anything worth while with it. I remember a lot of talk about the show being overly cruel at times. I even saw someone call him, and I quote, a "maladjusted misogynistic rapist" on ANN(anime news network). I don't think he is as bad as that, this is an anime after all, but certainly worthy of being #4 on my list.
Worst Anime #3
Pupa
Created by Studio Deen and directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. He also directed "Ballad of a Shinigami"
Utsutsu Hasegawa and his sister Yume Hasegawa have the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They both get infected with the Pupa virus after seeing red butterflies. This turns Yume into a giant monster who eats people and Utsutsu regenerative abilities. Can you guess where this is heading?
If you guessed Utsutsu "feeding" his little sister, you'd be right...unfortunately. The show is a horror anime with some graphic violence through out. This was the only anime in recent memory I actually asked out loud while watching, "wtf is this?" My TV had no answers, or was ignoring me, so I just kept watching. It actually tried to make cannibalism sexy. Seriously, I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. The less I say about this awful anime the better. If some one tells you to try it since you can watch the entire series in under an hour, don't do it. Just don't.
*Editors note: I initially went with Midori Days here, but I went with Pupa instead to change it up a bit. Pupa is probably the worst of the two, but Midori days is still terrible. Believe me*
Worst Anime #2
School Days
Made by studio THK and directed by Keitaro Motonaga. He worked on "Katanagatari" and "Date a Live".
Makoto Ito, a first-year high school student, has various romantic relationships and is generally hated by everyone who see this anime. A lot of what I could say about the plot would be spoilerish, so lets just say he deserves what he gets.
The show is essentially a slice of life /harem that was based off an eroge by the same name. There is a thought by some anime fans that this is an amazing deconstruction of the harem genre. "It's not shit, they meant to do this" kind of thing... I am not one of those fans. The show was awful, and there was no ulterior motive behind it imo. It did have an amazing ending, one that is still talked about to this day even though the anime was released back in 2007. So yeah, awful show. What could be worse than this you ask? Well, it may be surprising since I know plenty of people who love this anime. I however... I personally can't stand it.
My #1 Worst Anime is...
Excited?
Almost....
I'm building suspense
Lucky Star
Made by KyoAni and directed by Yutaka Yamamoto and Yasuhiro Takemoto. They have both worked on other popular KyoAni works such as "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and "Kanon (2006)".
The plot... ha...haha. What plot? There is no plot. As far as I can tell it is a slice of life, school comedy that is based around comedic bits. I say comedic loosely, because it is more annoying than funny. There are some references to other anime and such through out, which is the point I usually hear when someone tells me it is good. I counter with the first 6 mins of the show is talking about a the correct way to eat a pastry and other assorted foods. Six bloody minutes. That happens all over this show. They start to have a "funny" conversation and they just... won't... get on with it. I still haven't completed the series, even though I've tried on multiple occasions, but no other anime has that distinction of "so annoying I can't make myself finish it". This makes it my #1 Worst Anime.
How I feel when trying to watch Lucky Star |
Some "honorable" mentions go to Deadman Wonderland, Final Fantasy Unlimited, and Midori Days
And that's it. I realized as the list went on I said less and less about the shows, but I have a good reason... I hate them :) So, did you agree with some, part, or none of my list? Can't believe what I chose? Feel free to comment your reactions or your own top five list but be civil. A fellow blogger and Anime lover asked me to join her in making our respective top five worst lists. I agreed and I'm glad I did! Go check out Salome D's blog, "Salome's Tales"(Parental Discretion Advised), and see what she choose as her Top Five Epic Fails! I know I'm curious.
Tomorrow, I'll make a post with my plans for posts next week. Until then, thanks for reading. Stay True.... still working on a sign off so bear with me lol.
Tsubasa Chronicles is one of my fav, great list though. This was really fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks, and yes it was cool to do at least once.
DeleteWhy is it so hard to comment on blogger?
ReplyDeleteIt should just open a box for comments...I will probably add disqus instead to make it a bit easier. It's on my to do list :)
DeleteI didn`t see this coming, I thought Pupa was pretty good, school days is awful
ReplyDeleteThat's what is so great about these things, no one is wrong :) No one will agree with my entire list, or anyone's list really, but it would surprise me if someone didn't agree with at least one. Thanks for the comment.
